If you followed up on my previous post announcing the Healing Cancer World Summit, I’m sure you’d be glad that you availed yourself of the opportunity.

Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez

Charlotte Gerson

For the record, here and in subsequent postings, I will attempt to summarize some of the main points covered by each of the personalities interviewed in this series. Hopefully,  it’ll provide a bit of an introduction to what’s out there, with regards alternative cancer therapies and integrative cancer therapies. Perhaps, it’ll even stimulate you to further investigation.

I’ll be providing important, relevant links, in each post, so you can follow up manually and benefit from more information, even if you’ve not listened to the recordings. Of course, if you’re inspired to purchase the whole package of recordings as well, then simply CLICK HERE for the further information on that.

Despite the good, and the often "heroic" work, that these alternative and integrative practitioners have been doing, they also have to deal with their detractors and critics.  For the purposes of this series of reports, I’ll keep my focus on giving you an opportunity to get a sense of what they each have to offer and leave the due diligence up to you.

So, to begin the series, Day #1 of the Healing Cancer World Summit, kicked off to a great start, with interviews with Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez and Charlotte Garson. This section is devoted to the former.

Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez:
This was my first, real exposure to an interview with Dr Gonzalez. I found myself riveted by his story and the background information that he provided.

Credentials and Background:
Dr. Gonzalez developed his interest for medicine through his early years as an investigative journalist, reporting mainly on cancer research topics. He is a graduate of Brown University and Cornell University Medical College, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer immunology under the famed Dr. Robert Good of the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.  Since 1987 he has been in private practice in NY city treating patients with cancer and other serious illnesses.

A major career change for Dr. Gonzalez, which took him away from mainstream methods, was stimulated by a subsequent meeting with an eccentric orthodontist, Dr. William Donald Kelley. Kelley had become quite popular during the ’60′s in California because of so many people having recovered from cancer under his guidance.

According to Dr. Gonzalez, Kelley’s documented successes were so compelling that he was given permission by Dr. Good to conduct a formal investigation into Kelley’s work. The results of this investigation covered over 1,000 cases and was brought to completion, five years later, in 1986. The results of this investigation were compiled into a monograph which Gonzalez tried unsuccessfully to publish.

Gonzalez acknowledged that his relationship with Kelley was stressed over this issue and many and varied stories abound on the internet stemming from this. An account of Kelley’s own illness and subsequent discoveries, which led to his recovery, can be found HERE. This is a transcript of a lecture given by Gonzalez in 1990 to the  World Research Council.

Both Kelley’s work, and ultimately that of Dr. Gonzalez, found it’s roots in the work of John Beard, Professor of Embryology at the University of Edinborough in Scotland during the 1890 – 1900′s. Essentially, Beard’s crucial observation was the stunning similarity ("no discernible difference"), between highly malignant cancer cells and that of certain, pre-embryonic, normal cells (making up the placenta), called "trophoblasts".

Of further significance is the fact that Beard noted that the day that the embryo first starts producing pancreatic enzymes, is the day that the growth of the trophoblastic placenta is markedly altered.

A book, written by Beard, entitled "The Enzyme Treatment of Cancer", which outlined his discoveries, was first published in 1911, but "got lost to posterity", according to Gonzalez. I’ve included a link to an online copy of this book, simply by CLICKING HERE

Modern molecular biology is now confirming Beard’s earlier findings and laying further claim to his idea that the placenta is indeed the "ideal model to study cancer".

Protocols and Treatments:
The protocols used by Dr. Gonzalez include THREE main components:

1. An individualized dietary regime.
2. Supplementation with vitamins, minerals and
     pancreatic enzymes.
3. Detoxification routines including coffee enema to
     carry out waste.

Everything is individualized according to the disease and the person.

"Food is fuel", say Gonzalez, "we need to put in the right fuel for the right body" ……. some people do best on a vegetarian diet, others with more meat and others somewhere in between.

Pilot Study and Clinical Trials:
In 1993 Gonzalez conducted a pilot study on using these methods in treating pancreatic cancer. The outstanding results were published  in 1999 in peer-reviewed literature. As result of this, funding of $1.4 million from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and co-sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, was awarded to Columbia University’s Rosenthal Center for Alternative Medicine. This was to fund a randomized Phase III clinical trial for the possible treatment of pancreatic cancer with the "Gonzalez Regimen".

The results of these clinical trials on patients with pancreatic cancer were reported in 2009. As you can read in this Wikipedia article CLICK HERE, the results were disappointing, to say the least.

In defense of his protocols, however, Dr. Gonzalez claims that there were forces at play, within the system, set to basically sabotage the trials with a purpose of preventing these protocols from gaining scientific credibility. As a result, Dr. Gonzalez filed a formal complaint with the Office of Human Research Protections and has just completed a 715 page book, which describes how the study was undermined.

Cancer, Emotions and Stress:
Questioned on any emotional link to cancer, he confirmed that it was a "very real issue" and that the mind and spirit are important parts of the whole dynamic of any disease.

He further stated that "Cancer is a complicated, constellation of events that come together" ….. but among those, Gonzalez believes, "STRESS is the greatest."

He explained that the stress response is a catabolic one; meaning, it breaks down tissues. We are essentially in a catabolic state when stressed; the immune system turns off and any healing that could happen is instantly negated.

Advice to Those Newly Diagnosed With Cancer:
Gonzalez’ advice to those who have just been diagnosed with cancer is first "Don’t panic!" …… if you have too, "panic for the first 2 hours or 2 days, but then, GET OVER IT!." In a state of panic, "we make wrong decisions". He noted that "those who do best, get over it and focus on what they need to do to get well".

Dr. Gonzalez backed up his statements with examples from the direct experience of his own patients. You can go to his website www.dr-gonzalez.com where you can read for yourself the many Case Reports.
